ENGINEERING INFORMATION FOR NEW BUILD
Area heating systems are the preferred solution for new build: radiant heat is the healthiest kind of heat.
The larger the heating surface area for dissipating heat inside a room, the higher the ratio of radiant heat, the more even the dissipation of heat and the more comfortable we feel. At a room temperature of 20 °C with an underfloor or wall-embedded heating system, we perceive the same degree of wellbeing as in a conventionally heated room at 22 °C. This is not only pleasant and healthy, but also saves a huge amount on heating costs. Additional low temperature radiators are recommended for cooling applications. Tip: lowering the room temperature by 2 °C saves up to 10 % of heating energy per year. Our system partners are happy to advise and support you in planning your new build.
- For new build and modernisation projects
- Ideal addition to existing boilers or solar thermal systems
- Hot water to 65 °C in heat pump mode only
- Low outlay
- Lowest running costs
- Fully wired with straightforward installation
- Environmentally responsible DHW heating
ENGINEERING INFORMATION FOR MODERNISATION PROJECTS
OCHSNER was the first manufacturer to launch a complete range of heat pumps with flow temperatures of up to 65 °C, now extended to 68 °C with the latest developments.
Because it is often impossible to use ground or water as a heat source when retrofitting, OCHSNER has developed a range of products with air as the heat source, especially for heating system modernisation. New technology and an extremely large evaporator (efficient absorption of environmental energy even when outside temperatures are at their lowest) achieves high performance factors with ambient air as well. New benchmarks and world records have been set. This has been confirmed by external tests carried out by the heat pump test centre in Buchs (Switzerland). Our system partners are happy to advise and support you in planning your heating system modernisation.

ENGINEERING INFORMATION FOR COOLING
PLEASANT COOLING WITH OCHSNER HEAT PUMPS
Alongside their main function of heating, heat pumps can also actively cool in summer if their technology is extended slightly. For nearly twenty years, OCHSNER air conditioning heat pumps have offered complete heating operation in winter and virtually full air conditioning in summer, with the highest efficiency. OCHSNER offers heat pumps with cooling function for all heat sources: ground, ambient air, groundwater.
USING AREA HEATING SYSTEMS AS A COOLING INTERFACE
The best solution is to supplement the underfloor heating system with wall-embedded heating elements or to simply use wall-embedded areas on their own. With this silent form of cooling there is no noise or draft to disturb your living space, as is the case with conventional air conditioners.
RETROFITTING – HEATING AND COOLING WITH RADIATORS
There is also no need to go without cooling if your system uses radiators, especially if you are in the process of modernising. If you swap some of your conventional radiators for fan coils – radiators with fans – you can also achieve the full cooling effect.
A MOST AFFORDABLE SOLUTION
You can keep your home cool without having to buy a separate air conditioner. An air conditioning heat pump costs only slightly more than a conventional heating heat pump and is also extremely economical to run. The cooling efficiency is significantly higher than that of conventional air conditioners. This saves money.
FULLY AUTOMATIC CONTROL
OCHSNER'S OTE home climate manager provides fully automatic control in heating and in cooling mode, as well as fully automatic changeover.
STORING SUMMER HEAT
Ground source heat pumps transfer heat to the ground during the cooling phase. This allows free, fast regeneration of the geothermal store after the heating season, resulting in more stored heat in the ground in winter. This raises the effectiveness of heat pumps in heating mode and saves on operating costs.
OPERATING COSTS
Whereas the operating costs of a heat pump in heating mode are dependent on the actual coefficient of performance (COP), the running costs in cooling mode are subject to the energy efficiency ratio EER. This key figure (cooling capacity divided by drive power) is determined primarily by the temperature lift – that means the temperature differential between the refrigerant flow in the heating pipes and the thermal absorption medium (water, earth, ambient air).
The smaller this temperature differential, the less energy is required for cooling and this, in turn, lowers the operation costs. Particularly in the case of water and ground, the temperature differential remains small. Outside air, which is naturally very warm itself on a hot day, demands a higher temperature lift in order to achieve a corresponding cooling effect. This is also why conventional air conditioners work with lower performance factors than heat pumps.
ENGINEERING INFORMATION FOR DOMESTIC HOT WATER
OCHSNER DHW heat pumps in the EUROPA series use either air/extract air or geothermal energy as the heat source, depending on type. All OCHSNER DHW heat pumps achieve a DHW temperature of up to 65 °C as standard in heat pump mode (Europa Mini and Europa 323 DK-EW types, up to 60 °C). Due to the efficient centrifugal fan and the aerodynamically optimised volute casing, air ducts of more than 10 m in length can be connected to OCHSNER's EUROPA multi function appliances. This allows for a whole range of additional benefits (mechanical ventilation, cooling effect and cellar dehumidification in any room you choose, as well as softened water). Multi function appliances can be installed in any room. Silent operation without odour or soot development makes this possible. In the boiler room for instance where preheated air is drawn in. Or in the utility room.
BENEFITS COMPARED TO OTHER SYSTEMS
DHW heating with oil, gas or pellet central heating system
Good reasons for heating domestic hot water with a multifunctional appliance if you already have an oil, gas or pellet central heating system. If you heat your domestic hot water with an average oil boiler in summer, only a small part of the primary energy input is made available in the form of DHW. This gives rise to unnecessarily high costs as well as excessive energy consumption.
Benefits compared to solar thermal systems
Even compared to solar thermal systems, DHW heat pumps score highly. Solar thermal systems require power for circulating water through the collectors and – if there is no boiler available – for heating water on days when there is insufficient sunlight. On top of this, the initial costs of the solar thermal system are comparatively high. A combination of heat pump and solar thermal system, to compensate the solar thermal deficit, is certainly possible.
LOWEST RUNNING COSTS
Approximately 75 % of the required energy for heating the domestic hot water is drawn from the environment, only about one quarter is supplied by electricity. This means that operation is extremely inexpensive even compared to solar collectors, because even solar thermal systems require electricity for water circulation through the collectors and for heating water on rainy days. Heat pumps and solar thermal systems can, of course, be combined. In comparison with fossil fuels, the operating cost benefits are abundantly clear.
SIMPLE RETROFITTING IN THE CASE OF EXISTING DHW CYLINDERS
In most cases, a DHW heat pump can be retrofitted, even if you already have a DHW cylinder installed which would normally be heated by a boiler. The OCHSNER Europa Mini can be installed without any major effort and connected to the cylinder. This small DHW heat pump can be used as a split appliance anywhere. Its outlay is very affordable. The integral loading pump and plate heat exchanger ensure the required charging of the cylinder with domestic hot water.
KEEPING YOUR FOOD SUPPLIES FRESH
As an option, your OCHSNER multi function appliance offers you an additional "climate effect" benefit, free of charge. This can transform your larder into a cool oasis in summer or turn it into a wine cellar. In the winter months, the cool air can be discharged outside.
DRYING YOUR LAUNDRY
Additional benefit when drying laundry– dehumidified utility rooms and cellars have the advantage when it comes to getting the laundry dry. This makes light and fast work of domestic chores. By the way, the softened condensate from the heat pump can be used for your iron or air humidifier. Cellars tend to be damp. Mould, rust, damage to the building structure and stored items are the result. The OCHSNER Europa appliance maintains the value of your house and prevents your supplies from spoiling. If you intend to make use of your heat pump's additional functions such as dehumidifying your cellar, all you have to do is install air intake and discharge fittings in the room to be dehumidified.
FIND A NEW LEASE OF LIFE
You need fresh air to breathe – modern buildings are heavily insulated. This saves energy, but prevents natural air changes. It is therefore in the interest of your health to ensure that your home is supplied with enough fresh air, rich in oxygen, via controlled mechanical ventilation, and that the stale air – laden with moisture, pollutants and CO2 – is extracted. The OCHSNER Europa series has the competitive edge in this area.
